Description
Fridays are a regular party run by friends who wanted a place to dance to great music on a soundsystem you won’t find anywhere else in Madeira. We aim for the feel of an intimate house party — warm, open and unpretentious — but as a public night for everyone. We play deep, trippy and uplifting tracks with rich rhythmic detail and melody. Our selectors and DJs each bring their own musical universe, so you’ll often discover something new. For this session we have a all night set of Jonathan Fletcher. He was brought up in London on a steady diet of hip hop, funk, and fusion. His first foray into music came in the early 1980s hip hop scene, performing as a guest rapper at the infamous Revenge of the Language Lab at the Embassy Club. By the late ’80s, he was deeply involved in the rare groove movement, spinning at underground warehouse parties across London. In the 1990s, his sound shifted toward the Jazz Dance movement, where he became a fixture at The Belvedere Arms and the iconic Dingwalls in Camden. Around this time, Jonathan cemented his role as a musical promoter through the Ubiquity events, which launched at Brighton’s Zap Club and showcased live acts such as The Brand New Heavies and Incognito, as well as reggae sound system legends including Manasseh and Jah Shaka. In the early ’90s, Jonathan relocated to the Czech Republic. There he was behind the first dedicated dance music club in Eastern Europe, DJing alongside industry giants such as Slacker (aka Shem McCauley). Now based in Madeira, Jonathan is fully immersed in the island’s vibrant music community. He is one half of Dirty Shufflers and co-owner of the label JMJ Recordings. Our sound system reveals detail without fatiguing your ears — and we keep improving it. Enjoy the 360° terrace over Funchal Bay, Levadia craft beer brewed downstairs, Nat’cool natural wines, a vegetarian plate and brownies for the munchies. We’re non-profit: tickets just cover costs; any surplus goes back into the next event. Think of the night as a gift — come as our friend and share the music.
