James Mapley-Brittle is GRRL, an artist and DJ who hails from the college town of Durham, North Carolina. There is resolutely nothing cozy or small about GRRL’s sound – they craft an exquisite world of music that explores the elements of future bass, techno, grime, gqom, breakbeat, and club without falling into traps or clichés.
With their future-forward style and finely tuned aesthetic, GRRL’s early Soundcloud salvos quickly caught the attention of some of cyberspace’s most savvy names. In 2016, GRRL was invited to do a show on NTS Radio and began curating playlists for Nest HQ, which led to DJ mixes lauded by Skrillex and gigs with Anamanaguchi, Porter Robinson, and AG Cook and the PC Music crew. From there, GRRL was enlisted to help score Alexander Wang’s Sisters movie and developed a sample pack for Splice, in tandem with frequent collaborator Nick Sanborn (of Sylvan Esso and Made of Oak), that leans into hardware sounds and the stretchy sci-fi drums that are a GRRL staple.
In between all this, GRRL has released three albums over the last several years, paying testament to their seemingly inexhaustible well of ideas and a hard drive filled with hundreds of tracks. 2019’s Pay Attention – inspired in part by racing games like Midnight Club and Need For Speed, Nike ACG colorways, and defunct ’80s logos – presents a cinematic vision of future club with 25 tracks that stretch the limits of jungle, grime, Jersey club, gqom, and beyond effortlessly. Odyssey and Marathon, released months apart in 2020, find GRRL playing in the electrical field between Autechre-style sound design, Night Slugs’ architectural bass heat, and Blawan’s subby techno landscapes, while their Operator EP for Jubilee’s Magic City label is a bright and fun homage to Miami bass and freestyle through a Drexciyan lens.
GRRL is less about a sound or a style and more so a personal vision that is constantly being refined. In a landscape cluttered with paint-by-numbers club tracks and algorithmic fodder, GRRL’s devotion to craft and intentionality in dance music is an icy blast of fresh air and a much-welcomed glimpse into an exciting future for electronic music.
