Description
Planetarium is an event for listening deeply. We ask everyone who attends to remain silent in the listening area and to step outside the space for any conversations. We also ask that there is no phone use in the entire space. If that sounds good to you, read on... _/_/_/_/_/_/ Planetarium presents its final event of the '25 - '26 season at the private loft in Ridgewood, a celebration of our friend Andy Beta's book, "Cosmic Music: The Life, Art, and Transcendence of Alice Coltrane", the first full-length biography of Alice Coltrane Turiyasangitananda, the jazz musician and spiritual leader. The night features live performance from Alice Coltrane Turiyasangitananda's student Surya Botofasina as well as Planetarium resident Rena Anakwe. Rena will also play musical selections, as will Andy Beta, the book's author. This will be our last session with the beautiful amps and sub from EM/IA paired with the five Klipschorns in the room. (It sounds incredible.) Bring blankets, sleeping bags, pillows, an eye mask and anything else you need to get comfortable and go deep. We do a small amount of reservations so that there's room to lie down. _/_/_/_/_/_/ SURYA BOTOFASINA _/_/_/_/_/_/ Southern California native son. Based in New York although metaphysically always in his Beloved California. Surya Botofasina believes in OneLove through music and all of its mediums. He is an actor whose has appeared on the critically acclaimed HBO shows 'Boardwalk Empire' and 'Vinyl'. Raised by the example of Swamini Turiyasangitananda (Alice Coltrane), with influences ranging from Sanskrit chanting to classic hip-hop; Botofasina considers all music a blessing to be passed on to the next generations. _/_/_/_/_/_/ RENA ANAKWE _/_/_/_/_/_/ Rena Anakwe is an interdisciplinary artist, performer, poet, and healer working primarily with sound, visuals, and scent. Exploring intersections between traditional healing practices, spirituality and performance, she creates works focused on sensory-based, experiential interactions using creative technology. She is based in Brooklyn, New York by way of Nigeria and Canada. Rena will perform live with Surya and DJ tonight. _/_/_/_/_/_/ ANDY BETA _/_/_/_/_/_/ Andy Beta has been writing about and sharing music, art and culture since in 2002, his words appearing in the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Texas Monthly, Washington Post, LA Times, The Believer and Pitchfork. His passion for music has meant everything from staging punk rock shows in his living room to digging for Bollywood soundtracks in Calcutta, exploring batida in the projects of Lisbon to making a pilgrimage to Alice Coltrane Turiyasangitananda’s ashram in Agoura Hills. As Albert Ayler once put it, he believes that music is the healing force of the universe. _/_/_/_/_/_/ DINNER + BYO DRINKS _/_/_/_/_/_/ Dinner will be served by Marisa Mendez Marthaller aka Soup Doula between 7pm and 8pm, when we'll keep the lights up and have a more social hour before we go deep. There will be two soups (one of them vegan) served with hunks of fresh baked bread. Dinner is included with your contribution. (You are welcome to bring your own dinner if you have specific dietary needs.) Otherwise, you can bring your own drinks (and your own cups). Just avoid cans. (The crack when they open is loud.) We'll have all the creature comforts that you might otherwise need inside, so you never have to leave the bubble we're creating. _/_/_/_/_/_/ RESERVATIONS + LOCATION _/_/_/_/_/_/ Because we do Planetarium at a private space, we only send the location info to people who reserve space in advance. We'll send out the location from ask@mistersaturdaynight.com on the morning of the session. Make sure to safe list that email address so you receive the notification. Also, before you make your reservation, be sure to check that the email address you have on file with RA is one that you can actually access. If you have not received this email by noon on April 25, but have reserved a spot, search your spam, junk, promotions and other folders for an email from ask@mistersaturdaynight.com. The subject is always something like: "Please Read: All The Info For Planetarium". So you know how to plan, we can tell you it's not too far from Nowadays, less than five minutes from the Halsey L. If reservations are unavailable for this weekend's events when you are looking, activate the notification function on this page, and you'll get an email if space becomes available. The resale system opens after all dates in a weekend are sold out and stays active until noon on the day before the event. After that, all reservations have to be final so that we can ensure that everyone who reserves space gets the address. We're looking forward to getting lost in sound with you. Until then...
