Description
This is a Planetarium experiment we're calling "Freedom To Move". In conversation with Chee and Zach, we've decided to to do a night that is more open format. We may play deep, and we may play music that is more activated – the idea is to remove some of the constraints that come with a strictly lying down, full bedding session as we normally do, in order to allow the music to take us wherever it might. Instead of bringing a full sleeping bag/indoor camp-out setup, we ask that you bring, at most, a yoga mat and a pillow. This will allow the space to be more flexible. If the music inspires you to move, get up and move. If you prefer to lie down, that's fine, too. Otherwise, the normal Planetarium guidelines apply: we ask everyone who attends to remain silent in the listening area and to step outside the space for any conversations. We also ask that there is no phone use in the entire space. If all this sounds good to you, read on... _/_/_/_/_/_/ Planetarium returns to the private loft in Ridgewood, this time with new amps and a sub from EM/IA to go with the five Klipschorns in the room. (It sounds better than ever.) We'll gather in front of the hi-fi to spend time together in sound. Bring what you need to go deep. We do a small amount of reservations so that there's room to lie down. For this edition, Justin Carter is joined by Chee Shimizu and Zach Cowie, and, as above, we'll set the room up so there's freedom to move. _/_/_/_/_/_/ CHEE SHIMIZU _/_/_/_/_/_/ The musical accomplishments of Chee Shimizu are vast. He runs Organic Music, one of the best record stores we've ever encountered; his record catalog, Obscure Sound, is, in the words of Resident Advisor, "a kind of Michelin Guide for record nerds... The book's prescience can be seen in how many of the records it lists have been reissued since it was published." He has been at the forefront of the re-exploration of long forgotten Japanese records, through his Japanism imprint, as well as behind a seminal compilation for the Better Days label, featuring icons such as Yasukai Shimizu, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Midori Takada. His own deep listening nights at SHeLTeR, a hi-fi room in a suburb of Tokyo, attract underground cognoscenti from all over the world, and his own musical productions are otherworldly collages. Each time he has played Planetarium – this will be his third year in a row joining us – we have been reminded that we were in the presence of a master. If you love music, if you love to be fully immersed in worlds beyond your imagination, do not miss this. _/_/_/_/_/_/ ZACH COWIE _/_/_/_/_/_/ Zach Cowie has spent his life in music, from labels to management to adventures in hi-fi. He’s toured as a DJ with Animal Collective and Fleet Foxes and, as a music supervisor, has unearthed obscure, perfectly selected music for films like American Fiction and Judas & The Black Messiah and TV shows like Master of None and On Becoming A God In Central Florida. Beyond all that, he's a musical wizard, always with some vinyl incantation we've never heard. This is his third year in a row playing Planetarium. The first time he played, he said, "If I don't make a few people cry, I did it wrong." He didn't do it wrong. BYO Tissues. _/_/_/_/_/_/ JUSTIN CARTER _/_/_/_/_/_/ Justin Carter is the co-creator and resident DJ of Planetarium, as well as the co-creator and a resident DJ of Nowadays, Mister Saturday Night and Mister Sunday. Justin's practices of space making and music are intertwined, aligning to create moments for community and catharsis. With Planetarium, he builds a world for letting go, together. His tools are a shared meal, scented smoke wafting through the room, tuning forks, shoes placed by the door, candles flickering in the dark, a song sung a capella, records that create vast, detailed scenes in the mind and even the words you are reading now. _/_/_/_/_/_/ DINNER + BYO DRINKS _/_/_/_/_/_/ Dinner will be served by Marisa Mendez Marthaller aka Soup Doula between 7pm and 8pm, when we'll keep the lights up and have a more social hour before we go deep. There will be two soups (one of them vegan) served with hunks of fresh baked bread. Dinner is included with your contribution. (You are welcome to bring your own dinner if you have specific dietary needs.) Otherwise, you can bring your own drinks (and your own cups). Just avoid cans. (The crack when they open is loud.) We'll have all the creature comforts that you might otherwise need inside, so you never have to leave the bubble we're creating. _/_/_/_/_/_/ RESERVATIONS + LOCATION _/_/_/_/_/_/ Because we do Planetarium at a private space, we only send the location info to people who reserve space in advance. We'll send out the location from ask@mistersaturdaynight.com on the morning of the session. Make sure to safe list that email address so you receive the notification. Also, before you make your reservation, be sure to check that the email address you have on file with RA is one that you can actually access. If you have not received this email by noon on Saturday, January 31, but have reserved a spot, search your spam, junk, promotions and other folders for an email from ask@mistersaturdaynight.com. The subject is always something like: "Please Read: All The Info For Planetarium". So you know how to plan, we can tell you it's not too far from Nowadays, less than five minutes from the Halsey L. If reservations are unavailable for this weekend's events when you are looking, activate the notification function on this page, and you'll get an email if space becomes available. The resale system opens after all dates in a weekend are sold out and stays active until noon on the day before the event. After that, all reservations have to be final so that we can ensure that everyone who reserves space gets the address. We're looking forward to getting lost in sound with you. Until then...
