Artist Bio: Yissy Garcia, born on May 29, 1987, in Havana, is a talented female drummer with a rich musical heritage, inspired by her father, drummer Bernardo Garcia, co-founder of the legendary band Irakere. She began studying percussion at age 9, earning numerous awards and playing with renowned musicians like Horacio Hernández, Giovanny Hidalgo, Arturo Tappin, and Roy Hargrove. From 2006 to 2011, she was a member of the all-female salsa band Anacaona, performing in Cuba and international festivals. Developing an interest in jazz, she worked closely with artists like Alexis Bosch, Bobby Carcasés, and Yasek Manzano, emerging as a standout talent. In 2012, Yissy launched her solo career with the fusion jazz project YISSY & BANDANCHA. She regularly performs at major Cuban festivals like Jazz Plaza, JoJazz, and Havana World Music. In addition to her solo work, she collaborates with artists such as Interactivo, Alexis Bosch, and Telmary. In 2014, she joined Kelvis Ochoa, William Vivanco, and Yusa for the Festival El sur suena a cubano in Argentina, toured Japan with Yusa, and performed on Gema Correderas’ album Felling Marta. She also toured Mexico with Omara Portuondo. Since 2014, Yissy has been a member of Maqueque, a band led by Canadian saxophonist Jane Bunnett, performing at major festivals in Canada and the US. With Maqueque, she recorded Jane Bunnett and Maqueque, which won a Juno Award in 2015 for Best Jazz Album. In 2015, she recorded her debut album Última Noticia and toured the US with her band. She was also featured in a Brazilian TV documentary showcasing the leading figures of Cuban jazz.
