Día de Muertos is the moment when we embrace death, when we no longer fear it. In embracing death, we embrace life in equal measure. This day teaches us that creation moves in cycles, and that to honor these cycles is also to honor those who came before us.
It is a Mexican-rooted tradition that invites us to celebrate with offerings, to strengthen the bonds of lineage, family, ancestry, and humanity. To celebrate those who walked before us is to celebrate our present history.
On this night, it is believed that portals open between worlds. Through them, we uplift the memory of the past and locate ourselves in the present. This is how we celebrate: through dance, through liberation, through offerings of food and sweets, mezcal, copal, and flowers : gifts for those who care for us from beyond.
Día de Muertos is a night of remembrance and a night of honor. But above all, it is a night of celebration — celebration of being alive, of embodying this physical reality. Music becomes the medium that weaves the dimensions together, linking the living with the dead, the microcosm with the macrocosm.
The invitation of this day is simple: not to be who you are not, but to fully become who you came here to be.
