Description

Friday, May 6, 2022 Doors 10PM Advance Tickets on sale Get Tickets: bit.ly/freddykdc Since the 90s, Freddy K has been defending vinyl and reinforcing the techno movement behind the scenes. His move to Berlin allowed his career to flourish as he became a fan favorite at Homopatik thanks to his 10-16 hour marathon vinyl sets. If it’s not for his sets, he’ll be recognized as the person behind the KEY Vinyl record label, which brings arguably some of the best techno to the forefront. After decades of championing techno and vinyl, we welcome Freddy K to the District for his Flash debut. Freddy will be joined by co-founder of the Leisure System label, Barker. The British born, Berlin based artist has contributed in pushing the boundaries of the dance music scene in Berlin, going beyond the city’s sound of 4/4 techno. His approach behind the decks combines bass music tropes, breakbeat, dub and ambient elements while still maintaining a strong connection with the dance floor. His broad musical vision both solo and with longtime Panorama Bar resident nd_baumecker has resulted in multiple EPs, LPs, and remixes for Ostgut Ton and Leisure System, which has one of the longest residencies at the infamous Berghain. // Club Level // Freddy K (KEY Vinyl | Berlin) soundcloud.com/freddy_k_berlin ra.co/dj/freddyk Barker (Leisure System | Berlin) soundcloud.com/voltek ra.co/dj/barker Steve Kirn soundcloud.com/steven-kirn ra.co/dj/stevekirn // Green Room // Black Loops (Berlin) soundcloud.com/blackloops ra.co/dj/blackloops Mazi R soundcloud.com/mazi_r Steve Kirn // Bar: Modern Class // The Quartermaine (Love People Records) lovepeoplerecords.com/ Trev-ski (Modern Class) soundcloud.com/trev-ski Haz (Modern Class) _________________________________ ⠶⠶⠶⠶⠶ Flash Safe Space Policy ⠶⠶⠶⠶⠶ It is Flash’s mission to maintain a safe space where we all feel at home. You will know him best for his marathon DJ sets and deviant selections. You might recognise him as the head of KEY Vinyl, or for the backstage role he played at M_Rec, the label he helped run with best friend Max_M. You should definitely know about Virus, the thing that started it all off for him back in Rome. Lory D and Leo Anibaldi’s The Sound of Rome movement; Luca Cucchetti’s renowned Mad radio shows; warehouses, soundsystems and rave all informed Freddy K’s earliest obsession with techno. He started DJing at Sunday after hour events, having danced all through the night himself. In 1993, aged 21, he launched his now famous Virus radio show, which ran daily from 8PM to midnight, and from midnight to 6AM every Saturday. Parties, a booking agency and record shop soon followed: the Virus movement had arrived. A year later Freddy K signed to the legendary ACV, who released his first EP, Control. Rage Of Age, his debut album came in 1995; a dark and noisy record influenced by his two passions, Chicago acid and rock. It was widely lauded throughout the country and remains a testament to the old Sound of Rome today. (Continue reading on ra.co/dj/freddyk/biography) Barker: As a musician, DJ and co-founder of the Leisure System label, Sam Barker has helped push the boundaries of dance music in Berlin, looking beyond the realm of 4/4 techno to explore left-field sound design and rhythmic complexity. His musical approach – both solo and in the duo Barker & Baumecker with longtime Panorama Bar resident nd_baumecker – unselfconsciously combines bass music tropes, breakbeat, dub and ambient elements while still maintaining a strong connection to the dancefloor. This broad musical vision has not only guided Barker & Baumecker’s various EPs, LPs, and remixes for Ostgut Ton (most recently the 2016 LP Turns), but also Barker’s curatorial direction for Leisure System, which now boasts one of the longest club night residencies at Berghain. Having put out records by the likes of Dopplereffekt, as well early EPs by Objekt and Visionist, Barker has proudly operated on techno’s periphery – and, in the process, sought to shift its center. His EP Debiasing marked his solo debut release with Ostgut Ton, taking a hard look at the musical elements often considered necessary to maintain dancefloor momentum, offering four distinct, driving, hypnotic and unlikely dancefloor tools. His solo debut album solo debut album Utility – out September 2019 on Ostgut Ton – is a playful but non-ironic musical approach to a whole spectrum of utilitarian and transhumanist ideas. A classically trained musician, British-born and Berlin-based Barker is also an active instrument designer and builder who combines coding skills with analogue, electric and acoustic instrument construction under the name Voltek. Most recently he worked together with Underground Resistance’s Ray 7 on a sonic architectural exploration of empty factories in Detroit using self-programmed analogue percussion instruments.
