Dancing in Socks makes their debut in the main room at Music For A While. This evening features Kristen London (co-founder), Szobi (co-founder), and jOrrell.
Dancing in Socks started in a small Alphabet City studio (hence the name) focused on exploring house music in a safe space. Since then, they've expanded into venues like Elsewhere, House of Yes, Jupiter Disco, and Anything, but that small apartment party ethos will always stand, no matter the room.
Kristen London is an NYC-based DJ with a deep love for dance music, the history of the dancefloor, and the community that continues to keep it alive. While her selections are steeped in traditional and modern jazz influences, she loves to weave in elements of breakbeat, funk, hard house, and classic house—building her sets more around “vibes” than around specific genres.
Szobi was introduced to dance music in the early 2000’s on the dancefloors of his hometown, Budapest. His influences are rooted in European dance music from the 80s to the 2000s, with a mix of Italo disco, indie dance, creating a future disco sound. A founder of community and party series Dancing in Socks, he's played around New York City music institutions such as Elsewhere, Earthly Delights and Jupiter Disco. His passion for musical exploration and dance helps him create lively dancefloors with the unexpected.
Jason Orrell aka jOrrell cemented his lifelong love for house music in Y2K-era raves and the tail end of NYC institutions Body and Soul and the Shelter. His selections draw from the decades-long legacy of club culture, surfacing hidden gems and contextualizing fresh takes on this timeless sound. Joining with party crew Dancing in Socks has brought him to storied Brooklyn venues like Elsewhere, Jupiter Disco and Earthly Delights. His work as a yoga teacher informs his passion for connecting bodies, movement and sound.
