Diafano presents "Antes De Me Despedir" by Gabriella Melo An altar is a space dedicated to reverence. It’s a daily ritual that allows you to connect with your loved ones, hold space for yourself, and prioritize mind/body connection. Cultures across the world have used this practice as a form of spiritual enlightenment that is passed down for generations. For Gabriella, it’s a way to honor those that came before her and the paths that they paved for her. She will be presenting a series of altars dedicated to her late grandmother, Calina. In Gabriella's work, she presents herself as a collector of moments, people, and places. To glean a moment is to preserve it. It’s a way to feel rooted in a place and time during a period of her life where “home” feels uncertain. Gabriella took this idea of gleaning memories from her grandmother, who so carefully guarded many memories and photos that tell the story of their family. So, for their posthumous collaboration, they meld their love of storytelling, collage, and photography into a celebration of her life.
