The episode begins with the presentation of Benham's upcoming album, titled "Water and Dreams," released under his ambient alias, "The Rainbow Machine." This album takes inspiration from Gaston Bachelard's poem "L'eau et les rêves" (1942), which explores the concept of sounds as a collective entity known as "dreaming bodies." Benham's work features field recordings captured in and around Cosmo, a venue located in Venice, focusing on the ethereal qualities of water. These recordings include sounds from the lagoon, gondolas, tourists, and even the voices of Venetians protesting against cruise ships prior to their ban in the city. Benham incorporates his signature guitar sounds to create a diverse and harmonious palette that resonates beautifully within the unique acoustics of the former church where Cosmo is situated. The immersive experience is enhanced through a multi-channel diffusion system that intricately weaves together the layers of water and guitar, utilizing the dome's reverberation to achieve a symphonic balance between light and time. In the second part of the episode, Emanuele Wiltsch Barberio and cellist Gabiele Tai take the stage for a live performance. Barberio's delicate and ethereal vocalizations intertwine with the enchanting melodies produced by Tai's cello. These vocal and cello elements are synthesized and looped, forming the foundation for additional layers of organic performance that seamlessly blend with the extraordinary acoustic properties of the centuries-old church where they will be performing. This groundbreaking "Hyper-Broadcast" represents a remarkable first-of-its-kind experience, offering viewers a captivating and immersive sensory window into the deconsecrated church, once dedicated to Saints Cosma and Damiano, located on the island of Giudecca in Venice.
