Saturday March 22, 2025 Doors 9pm - 2am During the 1990s and early 2000s, Ricardo Villalobos made frequent visits to Romania, significantly influencing an entire generation of clubbers and music aficionados. His unique sound, record selection, and mixing style left a lasting impact on several rising Romanian artists. Among them were Raresh, Petre Inspirescu, and Rhadoo, who would go on to form the core of what became known as the Romanian sound. By the mid-2000s, the three artists had begun developing a distinctive musical style, incorporating their own edits and reinterpretations of tracks. Their approach elevated the loopy beat structures of house music, intertwining them with serialist, modular-derived harmonic elements. Their dedication to their craft cultivated a devoted underground scene in Romania and, over time, their influence began to resonate on a global scale. Among the three, Raresh has played the most back-to-back sets with Ricardo Villalobos. A legendary 7+ hours recording of such a back-to-back encounter between Raresh and Ricardo at Kristal Club from 2007 was widely circulated, highlighting the artists’ deep musical knowledge and technical mastery. Around the same time, Raresh, Petre Inspirescu, and Rhadoo began playing as [a:rpia:r], their collaborative alias, at venues like Circoloco (DC-10, Ibiza) and various underground clubs, gaining international recognition. [a:rpia:r] are regarded as the fathers of the Romanian sound, a genre that has evolved into a global movement within underground electronic music. As a DJ, Raresh’s influence remains significant—his sets span from house and deep house to minimal and tech, often reviving forgotten gems and transforming them into anthems played by countless other DJs. When hearing a Raresh set, you are just as likely to discover an unreleased Villalobos remix as you are to experience a life-affirming deep house track from the ’90s.
