Zeyzey Selects: Pachyman

Over the course of four albums, Puerto Rico–born, Los Angeles–based musician Pachy García has established his Pachyman moniker as a vital force in modern dub reggae. Working from his basement studio, 333 House, he’s long honored the lineage of King Tubby and The Scientist—building dense soundscapes with vintage gear and an intuitive grasp of repetition. With his fifth album Another Place (ATO Records), Pachyman pushes beyond purist dub into a more personal and expansive vision. He draws on everything from vaporwave and krautrock to soul-jazz, post-punk, and dub techno, creating what he calls “a very personal, vulnerable journey.” Tracks like “Berlin” nod to Boards of Canada and Berghain techno, while “In Love” recalls Washed Out’s hazy bliss and “Hard To Part” channels ESG’s skeletal funk. A veteran of Puerto Rico’s reggae and experimental rock scenes and the LA noise-pop underground, Pachy now embraces his voice as much as his instruments, layering improvised mantras and harmonies that reveal both anxiety and joy. Still rooted in dub reggae, Another Place affirms Pachyman’s refusal to repeat himself—transforming tradition into something wholly his own.
