/ MOURAS ENCANTADAS - IN COLLABORATION WITH WUMANAS
The tales of the Mouras Encantadas are deeply rooted in folklore, bridging mythology with history and symbolism, captivating our imagination to journey to magical realms. They represent the genuine strength, power, and authentic resilience of women, which resulted in their marginalisation and persecution by men who feared their abilities. They personify the union of nature and beauty, and embody the guardians of hidden treasures, the custodians of sacred spaces, and the teachers of our world. Together with Wumanas (’The Female Platform’), we’re reviving the spirits of the Mouras Encantadas, inviting them to step out of their confines and unite on our golden shores as they revel in the wonders of music, arts and community, free to play and express their formidable crafts and talents again, finally.
/ ABOUT THE MOURAS ENCANTADAS
The Mouras Encantadas were mythical figures from Portuguese folklore believed to be the spirits of Moorish princesses and noblewomen that were enchanted and cast away by men who feared their genuine strength and powers. These supernatural beings lived in castles and underground caves, guarding their lands and the great treasures and abundant wealth hiding within them. These tantalising maidens had bewitching eyes, appearing to wandering travellers in numerous forms, as beautiful women, dazzling lights or even as serpents. Legends depict these mystical creatures through their encounters with mortal men who could gain access to these concealed riches if they could simply resist their seductive allure. Those who failed, or attempted to steal the Mouras’ treasure, would be trapped within their enchantment forever.
