OPA! Festa Junina 2026
A full-day Brazilian cultural extravaganza at House of Yes
You heard about Carnaval, but did you know that every June, Brazil transforms into a month-long celebration? Communities come together to celebrate one of the country's most beloved and lively traditions: Festa Junina (June Party)—a harvest festival woven from Indigenous, African, and Portuguese roots, alive in every corner of Brazil every June. Centuries of joy, community, and folklore collide in the most colorful way possible. Think: accordion music drifting through a lantern-lit space, the smell of traditional food, people dancing forró, plaid and ribbon costumes, and the kind of warmth you feel when a whole room decides, together, to celebrate. So once again, the Brazilian theater company Group Dot BR brings Festa Junina to House of Yes!
The event is family-friendly from 3 to 6 PM — children under 12 enter free when accompanied by a legal guardian. The event is 21+ after 6 PM.
WHAT'S HAPPENING
🎧 DJs: Greg Caz, Lara Gerin and Tietta on the decks to make sure your body will move to the grooves
🪗 Live music: Live forró with Guilherme Monteiro from Forró in the Dark and special guests to be announced + Mambembé & Marcos Costa bringing the delicious rhythms of Bahia
🎭 Theatrical performances by Group Dot BR with Andressa Furletti, Dayane Carvalho, Douglas Tholedo , Fabiana Mattedi, Marcio Fein and Tatiana Birenbaum
💃 Forró crash course — never danced forró? No problem! Sabrina Evangelista will lead a crash course so you can get the basic steps and join the fun.
🎤 Performance by Pietra Parker — Brazilian drag queen extraordinaire
🕺 Quadrilha — Brazil's beloved group dance, open to all led by Sabrina Evangelista and Pietra Parker.
👑 King and Queen of the Quadrilha - Pietra Parker will host a competition — bring your best moves and your crown ambitions!
💌 Correio Elegante — the Festa Junina tradition of sending a little note to someone you fancy, admire, or just want to make smile. Anonymous or signed — that part is up to you.
🔮 Love Simpatias — a beloved Brazilian folk tradition: small rituals and charms believed to attract love, luck, and good fortune. In Brazil, Festa Junina is the most magical time of year to try one.
🎮 Festa Junina games — classic Brazilian party games for all ages from 3-6 PM
🖼️ Exhibition: "Acre in Celebration: Nature, Stories and New Futures" and a workshop, "Protecting Acre's Wildlife" for kids and teens by Duda Mendes - MoMA Teens-in-Residence & NYCLU Teen Activist. Curated by Angelica Walker Projects
