have you ever looked at that little clock on the microwave, the one that’s always flashing 12:00 midnight, and realized that it’s a new day but the time is the same as it was yesterday? we’re in record. have you ever felt the tug of commercial desire and turned on your internet, only to realize the ads peddling their wares seem to recognize you? we’re in record. have you ever witnessed something so unbelievable, that the only way to tell the story later without anyone getting in the way was to capture it on cam? we’re in record. have you ever experienced the sensation of the permanent irreversible newness of each passing second and thought, haven’t i seen this somewhere before? we’re in record. This special HDC instalment, to take place on May 24 at the Fridge, is a spiritual continuation of the themes explored in last year’s transdisciplinary undertaking, Live in Translation. This time, the audial performers advance the clockwork of the night. Four live modular musicians will inherit and expand the show’s themes of recording, repetition, and reinterpretation, performing sets that all feature an element or an orientation around the command and modulation of time. here are the musicians: Energy Runner will present a multidimensional recording-based modular treatment, reflecting our thematic elements through deep time processing and live sampling. Matthew Cha will present a Buchla & saxophone technojazz set incorporating the live looping/self-iteration techniques he developed for his final music school project, “Digital World.” POB will present an experimental IDM set framed by a fluid concept of time and rhythm, and powered by his deeply personal connection to and involvement with modular boutique Noise Engineering. Ri Caragol will present a live radio manipulation performance, capturing real radio waves and transmuting them through his modular. This performance will feature the unique technique of using a radio tuned to live stations as a sound source in the modular instrument: not to be missed. The Fridge is a community gallery space, and well-accommodating to a bespoke visual system designed and performed by Dytrip. Looking at the theme of We’re in Record from the other direction, the visual approach reflects notions of surveillance, spectatorship, and censorship. We hope you have the time to join us on May 24th for this showcase of alive, contemporaneous electronic art. Dress to listen, and say what you think. After all, we’re in record.
