Sobre nosotros
ONE Denver presents the inaugural Nighttime Symposium, where we talk to leaders in the local and global nighttime economy. In this edition, EDM Identity Editor John Cameron interviews Peter Wohelski. This symposium covers the history of dance music, its contrasting philosophies that battle between art and the pursuit of profit, and how those philosophies are shaping the modern landscape of electronic music, including in Denver, which boasted the most searches on Google for electronic music in the United States in 2022. A Denver resident since the early 2000s, Wohelski is best known as the former A&R for the seminal electronic label, Astralwerks, where he signed nascent iterations of Daft Punk, Air, The Chemical Brothers, and many more. He would then go on to become an early employee of Beatport, the Denver-founded online store for electronic music, which became the leading online store for dance music, and revolutionized how DJs and fans consume the genre. Before all of this, though, there was TRiP MAGAZEEN. In 1992, before the internet would dominate the global music discourse, Tampa’s TRiP was one of the essential guides to underground dance music. Along with DJ Three, and Grumptronix, Wohelski published 16 total issues, which featured some of the earliest American interviews of artists like Aphex Twin, Laurent Garnier, Autechre, Moby, and many more. Before and after the talk, there will be DJ sets from Mr. Frick and DEEDZ, two rising Denver DJs. Come experience this rare chance to hear the story of dance music told where Denver’s own story is still being written. FREE with RSVP.
